Even if the team has been in the National League for some time, they hadn’t yet had the opportunity to play locally as hosts. And even if the result wasn’t the desired one, with Huracan from Buenos Aires winning, the Basque club players enjoyed the game along with locales and above all the encouragement they received from their fans.
La Plata, Argentina. The Euzko Etxea team organized the games corresponding to the third phase of the Southern Zone National Blind Soccer League Championships for the first time on August 29th. The event took place at the UPCN facilities in La Plata where the club team challenged the Huracan from Parque Patricios and River played the Estudiantes.
Even though the Basque club team wasn’t able to surpass their rivals and lost 2-0, it didn’t diminish the players’ happiness who played locally and were encouraged to the end by their fans.
Members of the team who have Ikurriñas on their uniforms are: Lelio Sánchez, Carlos Juárez, Antonio Ortiz, Jonatan Gutiérrez, Gastón Cabiedes, Walter Mendoza, Pablo Villegas and Francisco Bolajuzon, who are coached by Martín Marelli and Ezequiel Barco.
The soccer for the blind project has been part of the La Plata Basque club since 2012. Since then players practice twice a week at the club’s facilities that are especially equipped for the activity. Having this caliber of facilities enabled the team to join the Argentine Federation for Blind Sports (FADEC) and also to compete at the national level. Currently, Nahuel Saenz, is in charge of this activity on the Basque club board.
