Ayacucho, Argentina.  Encouraged by the success of last year’s gesture that allowed the Basque club and the city government to collaborate and reform and improve two houses, this year the two will once again join forces in solidarity.  This time, the project goes further and involves the construction of two houses for large families with no means.

As explained to EuskalKultura.com by Maria Nilda Ilarregui, club member, “we will use a small subsidy received from the Basque Government that won’t cover all the costs, 106,000 pesos as published in the city’s newsletter, part of which will be covered by the local government, specifically for example, by providing the labor force.”

The good news was announced at a press conference that took place last Thursday at the Basque club.  The meeting was attended by the Mayor Pablo Zubiaurre; club president Ignacio Etcheverry and the Secretary of Social Development, Jose Mario Rodriguez; the sub-secretary of Social Development, Silvina Ramos; and the Area Director, Carmela Iturralde; as well as other members of the Basque club including Maria Nilda Ilarregui and the two families who will benefit from the project, the ones of Yanina Villalba and Silvina Villamon.

The mayor, who is also of Basque descent, referred to the project as a contribution that will benefit the community, the Basque club as well as the Basque Country.  He also stressed that the subsidy honors one of the characteristics of the Basques that is gratitude.  The Basque Country has suffered in its history and Argentina, and especially our region, welcomed a large number of immigrants.  Maybe this policy of solidarity is a sort of pay back to express their gratitude, said Zubiaurre.
