Barcelona Catalonia. The Euskal Herria Sona! Festival comes with a surprise under its arm, a surprise that was recently revealed, a free concert by Gatibu tomorrow in the middle of the Born neighborhood at the Montcada Plaza at 1pm. The Bizkaians are in Barcelona to perform tomorrow night in a venue in the city, but they are taking advantage of the afternoon to participate in “EH Sona!”
The festival is celebrating its 18th birthday this year, and as an adult is celebrating big. Eighteen years ago it began as a small showcase of Basque music organized by the Basque club in Barcelona. Nevertheless, it has been very well received and the festival has grown from year to year. This is how it has become the largest Basque music festival outside of the Basque Country.
Novelties
This year, the EH Sona! has three new additions. On the one hand, it will hold an anniversary concert, where for the first time, a Catalan group will participate. This is something that they wish to grow in the future, so that the concert provides concerts from both cultures and to join the forces of these two musical scenes. This event will take place on November 7th at the Salamandra Hall, with Glaukoma, at Versaris and Vendetta.
On the other hand, the festival will surpass the limits of Barcelona and will also be at the Alternativa in La Bisbal in l”Emporda, where several festival groups will perform a second concert.
Finally, this year, AlterEHSona was born, a parallel program that will bring music outside of the concert halls with talks and tours of the city.
Many Styles and Music
In regards to music, this year the festival will return to who a wide range of styles. For starters, the mythic group, Oskorri, will perform its only concert outside of the Basque Country as part of its farewell tour. Afterwards, Jabier Muguruza will perform his latest album at an intimate concert at the Basque club, but will also perform at the Razzmatazz (Governors+Larregi) and the Apolo (Anari).
Finally, EHSona! has begun a sponsorship campaign on TotSuma in hopes of raising money to keep concert ticket prices down, making the festival accessible to everyone.
