Over the next two years the Etxepare Basque Institute will expand its network of Basque language and culture lectureships in five new universities. During the 2015-2016 academic year, lectureships in Havana, (Cuba), Paris (France) and the University of Illinois (USA) will be opened. In the next academic year 2016-2017 two more will be opened in Edinburgh and the University of California Los Angeles.
Donostia-San Sebastian. The Etxepare Basque Institute is continuing to expand its network of Basque language and culture lectureships in universities around the world as part of its work to promote the knowledge and prestige of Euskera and Basque culture at the international level. During the 2014-2015 academic year the network included 27 lectureships teaching classes in 34 universities in 17 different countries.
During the 2015-2016 academic year three more lectureships have been created in prestigious universities:
- University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign (USA)
- Universidad de La Habana (Cuba)
- Université Sorbonne IV , Paris (France)
During the following academic year, 2016-2017 two more will open:
- University of Edinburgh (UK)
- UCLA University of California Los Angeles (USA)
Since the beginning of the program the lectureship network of the Etxepare Institute has evolved favorably according to Institute sources In the last four years, they have singned 24 more agreements with universities and the number of students has doubled. In addition, the lecturers also organize academic/cultural activities (some 250 since 2011), giving students the opportunity to live the culture and language first hand from anywhere in the world.
In hopes of reinforcing the training of current and future lecturers, the institute has organized the “Excellence in Basque Studies,” program every summer since 2011. This year’s edition will take place July 8-10, and is dedicated to writer Mariasun Landa. Enrollment for this course is still open.
