Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Chair will be managed jointly by the Etxepare Basque Institute and the National Council of Scientific and Technological Research in Argentina, CONICET. The official inauguration of the Amale Artetxe Basque Chair took place last Friday at the Gral San Martin Cultural Center in the capital city and was presided by the Director of the Etxepare Basque Institute, Irene Larraza and the Director of the Interdisciplinary Institute of History and Human Sciences at CONICET, Ariel Giance. Also attending was the Basque Government Delegate in Argentina, sara Pagola; the president of FEVA, Arantxa Anitua and a large number of community representatives.
This is the ninth Chair that the Etxepare Basque Institute has established in the world choosing to name it after one of the founders and the first president of Emakume Abertzale Batza in Buenos Aires (see previous note here). Friday’s event became a public tribute to Amale Artetxe (Bilbao, 1894-Buenos Aires, 1986) that included family members including her grandson, Ignacio Jauregui, who received a makila from Irene Larraza as a tribute and gift to the family.
After the ceremony, the film Dantza was shown. It was followed with a discussion with the film’s director, Telmo Esnal, and first dancer, Gari Otamendi. This was the last of a series of activities that began with a course and two conference offered by Santiago de Pablo, Professor at the University of the Basque Country, and a dance workshop taught by Esnal and Otamendi.
