Bilbao, Bizkaia. The work was presented this week by the Deputy of Culture of Bizkaia, Josune Ariztondo and the president of the Association of the Friends of the Center for Basque Studies at UNR, Pello Salaburu. The volume is part of the Center’s Classics in Translation series that began in 2005 through the collaboration of the Provincial Government of Bizkaia and UNR.
Linguae Vasconum Primitiae is the first book known in literature published in Basque and now it is in English thanks to the collaboration between Bizkaiko Foru Aldundia (the Provincial Government of Bizkaia) and UNR. The book includes an introduction by Beñat Oyharcabal and a prologue by Pello Salaburu.
The Center for Basque Studies has played a very important role in the research and dissemination of Basque culture in the US for more than forty years including being the premier reference for Basque materials in English. The task was first undertaken by Jon Bilbao and William Douglass and has won numerous awards, converting the Center into the main reference for information on the Basques, Basque culture, and Euskera for academia, technology and communication in the English language.
The Center for Basque Studies currently has what is considered to be the best library on Basque culture outside of the Basque Country. It also has its own unique and original documentation. All this activity translates into the publication of the collection that Etxepare’s work pertains to, a collection specifically on Basque topics of the Center for Basque Studies Press.
