As every year, the Basque Diaspora will celebrate Aberri Eguna all over the planet, one of the festivities with the longest tradition among Basques around the world.  Some clubs will celebrate this weekend, while others will do so in the coming weeks.  Following is a list of some of the festivities to come (check other in the events section).

Donostia-San Sebastian.   Basque communities in the Diaspora will celebrate one of the most significant festivities for Basques abroad this weekend: The Day of the Basque Homeland or Aberri Eguna.  One of the dates where love for the homeland and herrimina, homesickness,  is expressed during festivals, celebrations, lunches and all kinds of cultural and social activities.

For example, in Havana Cuba, the Basque community began an entire week of activities yesterday to celebrate.

Miami and New York

Elsewhere, like in Miami, FL the festivities will take place on Sunday the 5th with a picnic organized by the Basque club at the Royal Palm Island.  The celebration, as many at this club, will be at the lake including a meal and party to follow.

At Euzko Etxea in New York, Aberri Eguna will be celebrated on Sunday with a party beginning at noon at the clubhouse in Brooklyn.  The bar will open at 1pm and the meal will be at 2pm.  Afterwards there will be a party and a DJ.

México, Caracas and Necochea

The festivities will be held on Sunday in Mexico City as well with a meal at the Basque club in the Polanco neighborhood.  In Caracas, Venezuela, this weekend’s date is the most important of the year and it has been commemorated every year after the arrival of the first exiles from the Basque Country in 1939.  This Sunday there will be mass at the clubhouse, a wreath offering, hymns from Euskadi and Venezuela and an Aurresku, pelota matches and a meal.

In Necochea, Argentina, the Euskal Etxea will celebrate Aberri Eguna this Sunday.  The day will begin at 11am with mass at the Santa Maria del Carmen church, followed by a tribute and wreath-laying at the Tree of Gernika, and ending with a drink at the clubhouse. In Santiago, Chile’s Hilario Olazaran Association will celebrate Aberri Eguna with an event at the Plaza de los Vascos, situated at Cerro de San Cristobal.  The event will include fellowship between the Basque, Mapuche, and Celtic cultures beginning at 12pm.

There are many other places in the world where Aberri Eguna (will be celebrated this Sunday, this is just a sample.

Next week more

A large group of Basque clubs will also celebrate Aberri Eguna one week later.

The Euskaltzaleak in Buenos Aires will celebrate on April 10th with an afternoon of Basque film.  In honor of Aberri Eguna “Aberria” will be shown, a short film by Gotxon Elorza along with the Jostunak documentary.  Following there will be a discussion.  The event begins at 8pm at B. de Hirigoyen 826 (esq Independencia).

In the US, the Lagun Onak Basque club in Las Vegas will celebrate Aberri Eguna with a meal.  It will be at 3pm at the German American Club.
