In Montevideo, the exhibit “Gernika gogoratuz, 80 Years: a Basque Look from Uruguay,” wanted to show the people behind the painting
The Basque Diaspora joined in the commemoration of the Bombing of Gernika in a huge way last week organizing various activities and commemorations. Eighty years after the destruction of the Basque town, Basque clubs in Argentina and Uruguay remembered the attack once again, supporting a message of peace so that such events don’t reoccur. Following is a photo chronicle of the events.
Buenos Aires, Argentina. Last week we announced activities organized by Basque communities for the 80th anniversary of the Bombing and now we are including some of the photo testimonies of them. The bulk of the programs to commemorate the anniversary of the Bombing began last Monday with the inauguration in Uruguay of the exhibit “Gernika gogoratuz, 80 Years: a Basque Look from Uruguay,” organized by Aldaxka Kultur Biltzarra and the College of Education of Arts and Scicne at the University of the Republic. The exhibit included expression related to Basque, history, poetry and visual arts “in hopes of promoting the history of the Basque people, partially invisible after the great work of Picasso,” Aldaxka said. The exhibit was open to the public through April 29th.
At the same time, a large number of Basque clubs on both sides of the La Plata River remembered the bombing with various kinds of proposals. Here are some of them:
