Pete Cenarrusa passed away on Sunday September 29, at the age of 95 after battling cancer. A beacon for the Basque Diaspora, Basque supporter who contributed, thanks to his reality and position in the US, in favor of the people, language, and culture, a sentiment that was transmitted to him by his Bizkaian parents. His political career began in 1950 when he was elected to the Idaho House of Representatives, where he would later be selected Speaker of the House. In 1961 and for the next 36 years until January 2003, he served as the Secretary of State of Idaho. The force behind the unanimous support of the State of Idaho’s institutions for the “democratic rights of the Basques,” in Boise the Cenarrusa Foundation continues his work today in favor of the Basque culture. Gogoan Bego. He was a great Basque and a good friend.

Boise/Donostia.  Someone in the media once called him “The champion of the Basques” and he wasn’t wrong.  Pete Cenarrusa was born on a ranch in Carey, in the middle of rural Idaho in the heart of a Bizkaian family from Munitibar and Gernika, he was a real Basque, an authentic Diaspora Basque.  A Basque who was connected to his roots and committed to them.

In subsequent proceedings, under Franco’s dictatorship in Spain, as well as more recently while Aznar was the president of Spain, he mobilized his political influence in such a way that the State of Idaho, through both the house and the senate, unanimously approved a declaration in support of the “legitimate democratic rights of the Basque People.”

We will soon publish a special article with a photo spread with unpublished photos of Pete Cenarrusa, who always welcomed EuskalKultura.com cordially.  To his wife Freda, and his family and friends, to Miren Artiach, his secretary for years at the Idaho State Capital, our most sincere condolences.  GB.
