Madrid, Spain. On November 28 and 29 the Complutense University in Madrid was the site for a conference dedicated to the multilingualism on the Iberian Peninsula. The event gathered experts from various universities who gave ten talks that treated themes such as language policies, neighboring languages, standards, immigration, and strategies to support minority languages, etc.
Among the talks were two discussing Euskera that drew attention just from the program with original and provocative titles such as, “What does a Girl do with a Language like This?: The Standardization of Euskera as a Social Movement,” by Arantzazu Fernadez Iglesias, professor at the UNED in Madrid, and “The Languages Spoken in the Iberian Vasconia: Spasque and Euskerish,” by Karlos Cid Abasoslo, professor of Basque Philology at the Complutense University.
The talks aroused considerable interest in the students and the event was attended by more than 150 audience members. The conference also had echo in the media; the Radio 3, for example, interviews Fernandez Iglesias and Cid Abasolo, along with writer Iban Zaldua. To hear the interview go here.
