On May 1, people from Baztan in Mexico City and the surrounding area, gathered again at the Basque club to celebrate Baztango Eguna. There is something about this event that gathers bigger crowds every year who are ready to have a good time with their friends. Maybe it’s the food, a typical menu from Baztan, or maybe the good atmosphere, that never fails. Following is a gallery of photos.
Mexico City, Mexico. The Baztan community in Mexico gathered on May 1 to celebrate another edition of Baztango Eguna that gathered 150 people as organizers told EuskalKultura.com. This party began 13 years ago with an idea of gathering members of this large community to enjoy food and traditions from this valley in Navarre.
“In Mexico, the community from Baztan was very large and has been united for a long time,” they explain. “Emigration from Baztan to Mexico was notable until the end of the 19th century and during the entire 20th. That is why there are many families in Mexico that originated there. Today, there are many people form Baztan directly, children and grandchildren living in Mexico. That is why they like to get together once a year.”
Once again, a large group gathered and “everything went very well,” organizers said. The Euskal Etxea’s fronton was full of Baztandarras ready to have a good time and enjoy the typical Baztan menu created by the organizers.
The organizing committee included: Ramón Irigoyen (from Ziga), Josetxo Garaikoetxea (Lekaroz), Juan José and Maite Arrieta (Oronoz-Mugairi) and from Mexico Lourdes Arrechea, Guadalupe Montes, Mauricio Rivera, Mariel de la Fuente, Angeles Arrechea, José Antonio Zugarramurdi, Luis Miguel Zugarramurdi and Maricarmen Arrechea.
“We have been organizing this for 13 years and we hope to do so for many years to come. The organizing team is increasingly united and happy with how the event is received with more and more people attending every year,” Maricarmen Arrechea said.
