La Plata, Argentina. As part of International Women’s Day festivities in La Plata, every year women from each community are honored. In 2019, the Basque community, from the Euzko Etxea, has proposed to pay homage as a 'distinguished woman' to Maria Fernanda Astigarraga, who holds a degree in Library and Documentation from the National University of Mar del Plata, is a club member, as well as a board member of the Euskal Etxea and has been in charge of the Matxin Burdin Library and has been a Basque language student.
Maria Fernanda is the descendant of Bizkaians and Gipuzkoans: her paternal grandmother, Maria Teresa Arrizabalaga, was originally from Artea, Bizkaia; her grandfather’s family, Sebastian Astigarraga, was from Elgoibar.
Maria Fernanda Astigarraga will be honored on March 8th at an event that will be held a the Islas Malvinas Cultural Center in La Plata located on 19 and 51 Streets beginning at 7pm.
