The Centro Basco is organizing a dinner/dance on Saturday to celebrate its 75th anniversary. It also marks the 45th anniversary for the Berterretche family managing the place, an essential reference and meeting point for the Basque community in Southern California. Zorionak to Monique Berterretche and her children, Bernadette and Joey who are its current managers.
Chino, CA. This Saturday, in the middle of Chino’s Basque Festival, the Centro Basco Restaurant is joining in the festivities with the celebration of its 75th anniversary. Having become a referential part of the Basque community in Southern California, the Centro Basco has been serving traditional Basque food for three-quarters of a century, and has achieved a wide and loyal group of customers, Basques and non-Basques alike.
The Berterretche family will also celebrate its 45th anniversary since Monique and her husband Peio took it in 1970. Today the restaurant is managed by their children Bernadette and Joey.
The anniversary festivities will begin with some pilota matches, esku and pala, at the restaurant’s fronton. Afterward there will be music and a Basque dance performance by Gauden Bat. Dinner will take place outside, as it was done in the originally and will include BBQ rib-eye, garbantzos, lukainka, salad, bread and cheese. During dinner a slideshow will also be shown that includes historic photos of the restaurant.
After dinner, the party will continue in the fronton with a dance to the music of Holako, who is visiting Chino from the Basque Country and a DJ. To make reservations call the restaurant (909) 628-9014 or visit their website.
75 years of history
The Centro Basco was built in 1940 on Central Avenue by Jean Baptiste and Grace Robidart. The fronton was added shortly after, and in 1947 its owners sold it to Valentine and Victoria Jaurena, who resold it only 10 months later to Ben and Melanie Sallaberry.
The Sallaberys ran it and also rented it to others for several years. Monique and Peio Berterretche started running it in 1970and now their kids run. Zorionak for the anniversary! Ontsa ospatu!
