The CBS in Reno will begin a conference on the international contributions of Lehendakari Agirre on Saturday

The international conference, entitled, “The International Legacy of Lehendakari Jose Antonio Agirre’s Government” will begin on Saturday at the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno and will examine the international legacy of the Basque politician. The event will run through Tuesday with the presenters like, from the CBS, Xabier Irujo, Joseba Zulaika and Sandra Ott, along with special guests Angel Viñas (Complutense University, Madrid) and Julian Casanova (University of Zaragoza). 

Reno, NV   The University of Nevada, Reno is preparing to welcome international experts in history and Basque politics this Saturday who will analyze the international contribution of the Lehendakari Agirre’s Government, from its power as well as in its exile.

The congress marks the 75th anniversary of Jose Antonio Agirre’s flight, after the fall of Bilbao during the war, and his odyssey across Europe, under the nose of Hitler, one of Spanish general Franco’s allies, in Berlin. This conference is the first meeting that will take place at three venues, at UNR, at the Humboldt University in Berlin, and Columbia University in New York.

The conference was co-organized by the CBS, the Etxepare Basque Institute, with the support of the Agirre Lehendakaria Center for Social and Political Studies  and the Secretary General of Foreign Action of the Basque Government, as well as the Mikel Laboa Chair at the University of the Basque Country.

The conference will focus on the international aspect of the Agirre’s government’s policy with presentations by members of the Center’s faculty, Xabier Irujo, Joseba Zulaika and Sandra Ott, along with presentations by experts Angel Viñas (University of Complutense, Madrid) and Julian Casanova (University of Zaragoza).
