Bakersfield, California, USA. The California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) has awarded Basque-American Professor Steven Gamboa the Millie Ablin Excellence in Teaching Award “for his work awakening and provoking curiosity, vitality and interest in philosophy among his students.” Dr. Gamboa earned this award with which the CSUB recognizes the contributions made to its students, academic disciplines, and campus communities. Born in California to a father from Navarre and a mother of Basque descent from Nevada, Gamboa is Professor of Philosophy at CSUB and head of its Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
Member of Basque clubs in Bakersfield and Chino, and an active member of the Basque community in Southern California, Steven Gamboa is, in his private life, a culinary enthusiast and a great fan of the culture of the Basque Txokos, that he cultivates as an avid chef. At the University, he has promoted Basque Studies through Basque language and Basque Culture classes. Along with his wife Sandra, the couple has raised their children in an environment of participation in the Basque-Californian community, taking part in NABO's Udalekus and many other activities.
In regards to his university work, Gamboa has said, “I hope that during their time at CSUB students have an opportunity – to explore new ideas, think new questions, to look at how we live individually and socially and question some of the underlying assumptions that don’t always get called into question.”
Dr. Olson, department member that nominated Gamboa said “Steve is a dynamic teacher who inspires his students to share his own passion for ideas and reasoned discussion. The conversations that start in his classroom pour into our department’s hallway and continue across campus. He is also an extremely devoted teacher whose mentorship has helped his students attain success in a wide variety of fields.”
