Boise, Idaho, USA. On March 6th the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra debuted “The Basque Block,” a Basque music concert named after the local Basque neighborhood.  Since it took place after the pandemic started, the Orchestra rebroadcast its program through its online platform taking the music to the living rooms of each of its members and friends. The event also included the participation and collaboration of the Basque community in Idaho’s capital city.

The performance by the orchestra conducted by Eric Garcia included three very distinct components that included music composed by the Navarrese Folk Group Mielotxin, along with classic composers internationally renowned like Pablo de Sarasate from Roncal, and Maurice Ravel from Ziburu. The Boise Phil performed a Jota/Arin-Arin (Mielotxin),  Zigeunerweisen, op. 20 “Gypsy Airs” (Pablo de Sarasate) and Piano Trio in A Minor, M. 67 (Maurice Ravel).

Along with the aforementioned works, the research done by the orchestra in relation to the cultural history of Boise and the presence of the Basques there is worth noting. They approached the Basque community, including musicians and dancers and interviewed some of its members.  This concert is the result of that exchange, and part of the backstage could be seen in the show.  The concert video will be available for 30 days after its premiere.

The concert was very well received by the audience and critics alike who enjoyed good Basque music presented in the warmth of a walk down any street in Euskal Herria.
