Boise, ID. On December 16 the Biotzetik Choir and a group of Basque language students visited eight nursing homes in the city where they sang Christmas carols in Basque to those living there. The songs were directed by Patty Gavica, choir director, during a tour that lasted five hours.
“The older folks were very happy and sang along with the choir. There were even tears. It was a beautiful day and was very emotional. Some of the parents/grandparents or friends of some of the singers were at some of the residences, and so that was very emotional,” explained Izaskun Kortazar, Basque language teacher in Boise to EuskalKultura.com . “The last stop was to the house one of the grandmothers and there, besides singing, some of the choir members danced the jota.”
The singers were transported in a bus from one residence to another, where they continued singing in Basque and English while enjoying typical Christmas goodies like cakes, cookies and fudge. “There was no time to get bored,” Kortazar concluded.
