Chivilcoy, Argentina. The contest through which the Beti Aurrera Basque Club pays tribute to Gernika and the victims of the bombing has now reached its 10th edition in 2021. Co-organized with the Argentine Society of Writers, SADE, in Chivicoy, the call open to anyone in the nation was presented as part of the 84th anniversary of the massacre.
The theme of the contest is “The Tree of Gernika,” the historical event related to it and the Basque Homeland. Deadline for submissions is September 7th and the winners will be announced approximately one month later.
Awards ceremony including plaques and medals is planned for the beginning of December at an event in the event hall of the Euskal Etxea (of course with the health situation at that time allowing). Complete rules here.
In Person Event and Media Coverage
The commemoration of the 84th Anniversary of the Bombing took place April 26 at a small in person ceremony that included raising the Ikurriña and the Argentinean flag in the façade of the Basque club as well as at the Plazoleta Gernika in front of the clubhouse.
The Euskal Etxea also put forth a lot of effort to disseminate the event in the local press. In addition to the allusive newsletter in the local newspapers La Razón and La Campaña, club referent, Luis Goicochea was also interviewed on Channel 7 in Chivilcoy.
