Vitoria-Gasteiz. The news of the appointment was received with particular pleasure by the Basque community in Mexico since this designation allows Basques in Mexico to regain the delegation that was lost during the Patxi Lopez administration, which made this office dependent of the Delegation in New York, responsible for Canada, the United States and Mexico.
The satisfaction is doubled by the fact that the person appointed comes with excellent credentials and experience, having previously led, during the Ibarretxe administration, the delegation of the Basque Country in Brussels.
They have also stressed the important family ties that bind the new Delegate of Euskadi to Mexico, the country that welcomed his mother’s family, who knew exile all too well and who lived in this country. His mother, Garbiñe de Madariaga Aguirre, who passed away last year, was the niece and goddaughter of Lehendakari Jose Antonio Aguirre.
Mendibelzua is also familiar with Basque-American clubs and communities and he lived in the United States. As an University of Nevada, Reno student he was also involved in the local Basque club activities, being also a UNR Zenbat Gara Basque dancer.
