Llavallol, Argentina. October is marked in red on the Euskal Echea College’s calendar in Llavallol since it is the month of its Basque Festival. The event, led by its students, is one of the most massive and relevant in the Argentine Basque community, gathering some years around four thousand people, allowing the institution to show the work it has carried out during the school year.
In 2020, and because of the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic, they have not been able to carry out the festival in person. Nevertheless, the College has prepared a “Virtual Trip,” through the Basque Country and culture for students and their families, to enjoy from home the various expressions of Basque culture.
Virtual Trip
The trip begins with photos sent to the College from various parts of the world. Izaskun Ordoqui Urcelay from the institution explains that “We are proposing a virtual trip created thanks to the hands of the students, instructors, families, homes and alumni who all made it possible. We chose “hands,” since some philologists and semiologists have etymologically related the name of the Basque language, called eskuara in some places, with the word eskua (hand). Hands are the tools that take and make use of other tools, expanding the world of actions and technical and cultural possibilities, she told EuskalKultura.eus.
The proposal consists of a series of videos published on the College’s social media. It began on October 1st with a presentation and will continue over the next two Thursdays with tours of “geography, architecture, and mythology,” and “Euskera.” Next Thursday, October 22nd, the stop will be to enjoy “gastronomy” followed by two more videos on October 29th and November 5th with more of the promised content.
The Virtual Trip was proposed by the College’s Administrative team and has the support of the Department of Basque Culture and Art led by Izaskun Ordoqui Urcelay, Gabriela Bacasun, Aitor Alava Zurimendi, María Begoña Muñiz, Mauro Uranga and Ignacio Esquiroz.
