Buenos Aires, Argentina. The group that had formally registered in September 2018, as a simple association under the name Ekin Kultur Taldea, has now been obliged to choose another name. This is the result of receiving a notice in July letting them know that the name “Ekin” as well as “Ekin Dantzari Taldea,” and other similar names are now registered and so they are prohibited from using them. As such, the group has now changed its name to “OihanKide Taldea” (Forest Companions) as of September 21, 2020.
The group was established as a differentiated entity in 2018, but this occurred after several disagreements with the management of the Eusketxe-Eusko Kultur Etxea led by Maria Elena Etcheverry, and after the dance group left what had been its headquarters, which continues today to host the aforementioned Eusketxe and the historic Ekin Basque Publishing House, also chaired by Maria Elena Etcheverry, Irujo Ollo’s widow. Sebastian Amaya, president of the newly named OihanKide Taldea (Diego Orellana is secretary, and Clara Uribelarrea treasurer) explains that they have been forced to take these steps. They chose this new name in reference to the forest and the relationship between Euskal Herria and nature. “The forest is associated with the origin of the Basque culture and its mythology,” he said.
Currently, OihanKide Taldea continues its Basque classes and dance rehearsal/workshops. These two activities will take place virtually this year “a situation that favors us,” Amaya said, “since we no longer have a locale, a virtual space has become our place.” Now in the new pandemia phase of DISPO, that changes what was “social isolation,” to “social distancing,” in CABA, the dance gatherings will take place at Centennial Park, on Sundays at 10am, open to the public.
