Carabobo, Venezuela. As part of the “Route of the Basques in Venezuela” initiative, the Federation of Basque Clubs in Venezuela has dedicated a monolith at the President’s office of the University of Carabobo in honor of the founder, and the university’s first president, Dr. Alejo Zuloaga Egusquiza. Great grandson of Basques from Gipuzkoa, the illustrious lawyer and educator, born in 1853 in San Joaquin was the face of the University from 1892 to 1900. This project was made possible thanks to the receptiveness of current president, Jessy Divo and unanimous support of the University’s Council, as reported in the federation’s last newsletter.
The monolith “is inspired by Basque popular art” and consists of “a column finished with a stele, carved and painted on both sides, along with an explanatory plaque,” they explain.
The purpose of the project is “to spread the fundamental values of the Basque people, whose beautiful achievements we need to spread, especially in these times of moral crisis,” the Venezuelan Basques emphasize.
