Saint Pierre et Miquelon. The islands of Saint Pierre et Miquelon, French territory situated to the north of America, have maintained a notable Basque heritage thanks to the intense labor of entities like the Zazpiak Bat Basque club and the League of Basque Pilota. Among their diverse activities, both associations organize an annual Basque Festival. This year’s, its 33rd edition, will take place August 13-25th and organization is underway.
Organizers recently published a call on the Euskal Kultur Erakundea’s website looking for Basque musicians, invited by both entities that are participating in the festival. According to the announcement, the organizers will provide travel, and lodging for up to three musicians. Interested persons should send their proposals to lpbspm@cheznoo.net.
EuskalKultura.com spoke with David Lamoreux, Basque club member as well as of the League, who added that the club would like to strengthen ties with other Basque entities in the US and Canada, and that it is ready to collaborate with them in organizing activities.
New Pilota instructor
On the other hand, the League of Basque Pilota in Saint Pierre et Miquelon continues working to spread and maintain this sport on the islands and has announced the arrival of a new instructor, Christophe Sanchez, “very well-known in the world of professional Pilota in Florida,’ said David.
Sanchez will arrive in Saint Pierre et Miquelon this month and will stay until September, training and teaching youth in the area to play pilota.
