Yesterday the Avenida de Mayo was converted into a small Euskal Herria where one could enjoy dancing, music and food, Euskera and rural sports, just meters away from the Cabildo as part of “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country.”  The event was a success, not only by the number of people it attracted, but also by the presence of representatives from Basque clubs from all over the country, many from the province of Buenos Aires, but also from Cordoba, San Juan, Chubut…

Buenos Aires, Argentina.   Invited by the Laurak Bat Basque Club, a large number of Basque institutions and clubs, as well as friends and Basque culture supporters gathered again on the emblematic Avenida de Mayo to participate in the “Buenos Aires Celebrates” festival where the city government pays tribute to its communities.

From noon to 6pm, organizers provided the public with a large range of activities that included herri kirolak, by the Zazpirak Bat Club in Gral. Las Heras, a concert by the Lagun Onak Choir, dance performances by a number of Basque clubs dancers, recitals by Maral and Ixilik, a Tamborrada and a master’s cooking class by Chef Itziar Aguirre and Takehiro Ohno, among many others.

Besides these activities there were also food stands that provided Basque snacks to the public.

Representatives of the Gure Esku Dago movement were also present gathering materials from Basque clubs for the event that will take place on June 21 in the Basque Country, sewing as they went assembling the large patchwork of “fabric and desires,” from the Argentine-Uruguayan Diasporas.

The good weather contributed to the good atmosphere of the 4th edition of “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” that concluded with fandangos and kalejiras.  One of the most emotional moments of the day was when Laurak Bat paid tribute to txistulari and friend, Jose Maria Gutierrez.

As every year, EuskalKultura.com was also present, taking photos and capturing moments that it will share with its readers around the world in another article to be published tomorrow.
