The Basque club in Maipu celebrated its birthday with lunch attended by 70 people. At the event, and thanks to a video made by club members, everyone who founded, promoted and strived to keep the club alive over the last four decades were also present at the celebration. Zorionak, Maipu Alkartasuna!

Maipu, Argentina. The Anaitasuna Basque club has carried out a large number of activities over the past months. Among these was the celebration of the club’s anniversary on May 17 with lunch. In April they commemorated the Bombing of Gernika and also organized the “Juan Carlos Elizondo Mus Tournament.”

The anniversary gathered 70 people that enjoyed lunch and a wonderful menu. Throughout the day, there was music and dancing along with accordion music by Fabian Maya.

Also during the festivities a video (see here) gathered hundreds of photos taken at the club over the last 40 years. The video, nevertheless, and as explained by the club, “still must be finished.” In the words of president, Alicia Ithurrat, “the photos that Laura Etcheverry gathered were from what was made available to her, but we are sure that there are many more, in the houses in Maipu, taken at the Basque club, of moments and people who were not included in the first version. That is why we are inviting everyone to go through their things again and let us make a more complete video for our 40th anniversary,” she said.

Mus Tournament and Loung “Juan Carlos Elizondo”

Besides commemorating the 78th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, the Anaitasuna Basque club was also the site of another very moving ceremony, in this case, in memory of Juan Carlos Elizondo who passed away on June 6, 2014. “Juan Carlos was a member of the club but above all he was a friend and father to five dantzaris and a muslari. His sudden death left us all very shocked and that is why we decided to name our mus tournament after him as well as the room where the players usually meet,” thurrat explained to EuskalKultura.com.

During the ceremony attended by Juan Carlos Elizondo’s family, a memorial plaque was unveiled.
