The symposium, “An End to the Basque Conflict?” celebrated on March 26 at the University of Liverpool, gathered a large number of participants that debated long and hard on the Basque conflict, and the current situation of Euskal Herria. One of the talks that aroused greater interest was that of Lehendakari Juan Jose Ibarretxe. This symposium concludes this year’s activities of the Manuel Irujo Fellowship Chair.
Liverpool, England. The University of Liverpool gathered experts form the Basque Country, US and England on March 26 as part of the “An End to the Basque Conflict?” symposium. Some of the sepakers were Dr. Xabier Irujo (UNR), Dr. Kevin Bean (University of Liverpool), Professor Richard Gillespie, Amaia Agirre (Agirre Lehendakaria Center), and as key-note speaker Lehendakari Juan Jose Ibarretxe.
The Basque conflict was debated throughout the day, its roots and the current situation, topics that aroused notable interest. Audience participation was very active, and the questions and answers following each presentation were very interesting.
Presentation topics were greatly debated. For example, Xabier Iurjo gave two talks "Key Factors that Have Contributed to ETA’s Definitive Ceasefire" and "Reasons Behind the Drive for Independence in the Basque Country.” Kevin Bean spoke about Northern Ireland and the Basque Country: Two Peace Processes Separated by A Common Language?" while Richard Gillespie focused his talk on the topic The PNV and the ‘New Political Status’ for the Basque Country.” Amaia Agirre gave a talk entitled, “Now is the Time for Words…: Education for Peace and Coexistence,” while Lehendakari Ibarretxe’s talk was entitled, “The Basque Case of Sustainable Human Development".
This symposium closed the events of this year’s Manuel Irujo Fellowship Chair at the University of Liverpool sponsored by the Etxepare Basque Institute.
