The activities at the Basque-Argentine Foundation, Juan de Garay, in Buenos Aires will begin on March 7th with a lecture, “How Many Basques and their Descendants with Basque Surnames are there in the World?” by Jorge Beramendi.  The institution also has announced a tour to Iparralde and the south of France that will depart from Buenos Aires on May 15.

Buenos Aires, Argentina.   Faithful to their tradition, the Basque-Argentine Juan de Garay Foundation will inaugurate its annual cultural series the first Tuesday in March and this year they will do so with a talk by Jorge Beramendi entitled, “How Many Basques and their Descendants with Basque Surnames are there in the World?”  In the words of Beramendi, himself, “it is a topic that hasn’t been researched much, but we got an answer thanks to a research I have done in specialized resources.”

The talk will begin at 18:30 at the Foundation (Av. Roque Saenz Peña 846, 1st floor in Buenos Aires) and afterwards the institution will do a toast with those present.  Then, members and friends of the Foundation will have dinner at the Centro Vasco FranIparraldeko Euskal Etxea Restaurant located on Moreno 1370.

“In regards to the complete program of activities, since there are more than 40 Tuesdays, we prefer not to specify topics and dates since there always seems to be modifications.  What we can do is assure you that we will cover a complete spectrum of Basque cultural expressions including Euskera, Literature, History, and Geography to mention a few,” Beramendi said.

2017 Trips

The Foundation and the Basque travel agency Bask in Motion, in Hernani, have organized two trips to Euskal Herria.  The first will depart Buenos Aires on May 15th and is aimed specifically at the Northern Basque Country and the south of France.  “In general the trips to Euskal Herria dedicate less time to Iparralde, something that is understandable, but this time we want to dedicate an entire tour to this area, as well as to the south of France, where there has also been much impact,” they explained.

The tour will last two weeks and among the stops are Baiona, Biarritz, Donibane Lohizune, Donibane Garazi, Baigorri, Sara, Ainhoa, Pau, Maule, Foix, Andorra, Toulouse and Bordeaux, to name a few.  The trip will cost U$U 5,900 per person, double occupancy (U$U 6,900 single) and includes airfare, lodging in 4-star hotels, outings, admission and lunch, with the exception of two lunches on the free days.  In regards to payment, to reserve a spot you should send a deposit of 15% to the Foundation and complete all installment payments through April.  For the complete tour click here.

The second trip of the year will take place in September and in this case it will tour the seven Basque Provinces.  The group, also coordinated by the Foundation, will leave on September 1st, for 15 days during which they will visit the capitals and the most significant places in Euskal Herria.
