The anthology Best European Fiction published every December is a selection of texts with the best European fiction to read in the New Year. Among the texts of 29 European authors, editors have selected a text by Harkaitz Cano, from Lasarte, Mugaritz B.S.O. that unites literature and cooking with the collaboration of Chef Andoni Luis Aduriz, translated by Amaia Gabantxo.
Donostia-San Sebastian. The Best European Fiction 2016, a selection of the best texts by European authors translated into English, this year includes a text by Basque author, Harkaitz Cano. As is customary, the collection of works pays special attention to minority languages.
The work by Harkaitz Cano and Andoni Aduriz Mugaritz B.S.O. was selected this year by the publication. It is a collaborative project between the chef and owner of restaurant Mugaritz and the writer. Cano created texts to accompany the dishes by Aduriz, considered by many as works of art in their own right. Amaia Gabantxo translated three of these that were published along with recipes in Best European Fiction 2016.
Through this collection that began in 2010, new names and works are introduced to an international audience, in English translation, and shows that European fiction is still alive and going strong. It also gives a voice to works from smaller regions, that otherwise would be eclipsed by majority languages.
