Berlin, Germany. The Euskal Etxea in Berlin organizes the commemoration of the Bombing of Gernika annually at the local Guernica Platz. This year, due to the situation caused by the Coronavirus, they asked permission to hold the event. This morning, they received the joyful news that they will be allowed to celebrate, however being very careful, respecting social distance with no more than 10 individuals gathering. The news was received by club president, Ainhoa Añorga, who was very happy with the results.
The event will be celebrated on Sunday from 11:00-noon, as every year in the Guernica Platz, this year without live music, as over the last few years there has been a cellist, but with the usual program that includes the laying of a wreath, addresses, and the reading of a poem, this time leaving adequate space between those present (6 feet), with a limit of 10 people and the ground marked specifically for each event to take place without the opportunity for the traditional hugs and kisses.
This Sunday, April 26th marks the 83 years since planes from the German Condor Legion and Italian fascists, allies of Spain’s General Francisco Franco bombed the defenseless population of Gernika in the middle of market day, devastating the town and leaving behind a trail fo death and destruction.
