Caracas, Venezuela. The San Ignacio Catholic Social Organization (OSCASI) carries out a commitment to support and finance schools in the Petare Barrio in Caracas, one of the most humble and largest neighborhoods in Venezuela. According to Pedro Javier Arriaga Aguirre, reference of the local Basque community, “in these schools students with few resources are provided the possibility to receive adequate food and excellent education at all levels, which allows some to go on to university.”
Every year, and as part of an initiative that has also becomes one of the club’s activities, the Euskal Etxea in Caracas participates in the charitable festival in support of the OSCASI program. All proceeds obtained at the festival are used entirely to meet the objectives of the program, which include education, school supplies, uniforms and food for students with basic needs.
Arriaga explained that, “this year, as always, the Basque Txoko was one of the most successful stands selling food and drink. At the Txoko some 50 people worked, mainly from the Basque community.” The Txoko has also become a model for other stands at the event, contributing to the wonderful festival atmosphere.
