Anyone who attended Jaialdi in Boise were able to have a glance of the “Soka” exhibit at the Basque Museum. Now, Euskal Kultura Erakundiea will inaugurate the complete exhibit (150 square meters) in Biarritz. It is a multimedia view into the world of Basque dance with more than 400 illustrations (iconographic sources, interview excerpts, sound extracts, and archive images), as well as video creations on aesthetics or even the social aspect of dance
Biarritz, Lapurdi. This Thursday, September 10th the Euskal Kultur Erakundea (EKE, Basque Cultural Institution) will inaugurate one of the best exhibits produced on Basque dance called "Soka." The exhibit, which occupies 150 square meters will be installed at the Santa Eugenia church in Biarritz. It is a wide and modern view of the world of Basque dance and will be available to view until October 11. Admission is free.
The exhibit is in four languages (Basque, French, Spanish and English) and its contents are very diverse: Iconographic sources, interview excerpts, sound extracts, archive images as well as photos taking expressly for “Soka,” among others.
This is a traveling exhibit that the EKE would like to move through the Basque Country over the next three years. After its stay in Biarritz, it will move to Donostia-San Sebastian in February, as part of the Donostia 2016 European Cultural Capital events. Donostia 2016 and the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa have worked with the EKE on its creation. Other entities that have supported the project include: the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Provincial Government of Bizkaia, among others.
“Our goal is to show it in as many places as possible over the next two or three years: in the Basque Country, both Hegoalde and Iparralde, but also in France and if it is possible also in other European cities,” Pantxoa Etchegoin, director of the EKE told EuskalKultura.com. “Looking abroad we are working with the Etxepare Institute to present it in other places.”
EKE hasn’t forgotten the Diaspora, and in fact a teaser of the exhibit was available at Jaialdi in Boise at the Basque Museum in Boise. “Without a doubt we would like to bring it to the Diaspora, or maybe easier yet, to make a replica of it. That is the idea, but it’s too soon now, our first goal is to present it in Biarritz. We hope that you like it!” said Etchegoin.
If you would like the exhibit “Soka” to come to your city or Basque club, contact the EKE with your proposal here.
