Buenos Aires, Argentina. Since all gatherings have been prohibited by the Coronavirus, social media is now the new place to gather, and the world of the Basque Diaspora is no exception. Just a few weeks ago, we saw Aberri Eguna celebrations online; and the same occurred last Sunday, April 26th marking the 83rd anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika. Online commemorations and press articles: There were many clubs that shared messages and tributes to the victims online including allusive demonstrations and photos.
Here are some of the events that took place in Argentina and Uruguay commemorating the 83rd anniversary of the bombing that we have gathered from social media. This is by no means an exhaustive list.
In some cases, and with the help of audiovisual technology, institutions such as the Colegio Euskal Echea in Llavallol created and distributed content. This is the video made by the students in the Basque dance workshop by the 6th year of secondary school in the Llavallol Center:
From Chascomús, besides photos, there was an Aurresku performed by dantzari Lucas Etchegoyen, that was also shared online:
From Buenos Aires, Jose Gabriel Anitua from Laurak Bat shared his reflections in this video:
The Denak Bat Basque Club in Mendoza has a new member Gotzon Batikon, from Bizkaia, who currently lives there. To recognize this new anniversary of the Bombing, Gotzon Batikon did a different version of “Gernikako Arbola” and shared it in this strange video:
Talks and film
With many already used to virtual gatherings, there was no lack of talks like that broadcast from Euskaltzaleak in Buenos Aires on Facebook by Teresa de Zavaleta; or that by Silvia Azpiazu at the Laprida Basque Club that included the #NiEtxeanGeratzenNaiz (I’m staying at home) series carried out by Euzkal Etxea in San Nicolas. From Uruguay, FIVU also joined in online and gathered members and friends on Sunday at noon for a virtual tribute to the victims of the bombing.
There was also an effort to remember Gernika in the seventh art. The Basque Club in La Plata invited Carlos Gabilondo to talk about film, and specifically those that show and analyze the bombing from different perspectives.
