Lazkao, Gipuzkoa. “I already feel at home,” Faulkner said upon arriving, Itxaso Cayero, NABO Euskara coordinator, told Euskalkultura.com. Cayero, along with Aitor Inarra, is the person coordinating the Basque language classes in NABO, the North American Basque Organizations, and she came to the academy with the students. In her own words, the program is already “successful.”
Besides Mary Araquistain, none of the students has ever taken Basque language lessons with a teacher before, although some have used BOGA to learn Euskara via internet. “They are thrilled because they know that in this NABO program they’ll have English speaking teachers and materials especially prepared for them,” added Cayero.
Students will have eight hours of class a day but they will also use their time in Lazkao to learn more about the Basque culture, based on what Henriksen told Cayero: “I’m looking forward to trying the good food.”
