Basques in the Diaspora have once again beat those in Donostia and Azpeitia, and have already begun celebrating San Sebastian Day and its Tamborrada. The Basque club in Paris celebrated with a dinner on Saturday, and in New York, the Euzko Etxea gathered members for a meal on Sunday. Beginning tomorrow morning, the sound of the drums will extend through many Basque clubs around the world, like in Madrid, Barcelona, Montreal, Lima, Shanghai, London, Mexico and Argentinian Necochea, where they have organized, as always, a large program for the week.
Donostia-San Sebastian. The celebration of San Sebastian day will begin in Donostia and Azpeitia tomorrow at midnight, and will last for 24 hours, filling both localities with the roar of the drums. In the Diaspora, there are several Basque clubs that join in the festivities from afar, and some, like those in Paris and New York, have already started.
In Paris, the Basque club organized an event on Saturday with dinner in the Sagardotegi style. They also held a mus tournament to qualify them for France’s Mus Tournament (more information here). In New York, the Euzko Etxea celebrated yesterday with a meal and its usual Tamborrada at the end. The menu included fish soup, gulas, bacalao in tomato sauce and cake.
Young and Old in Madrid
In Madrid, the Tamborrada is one of the main Basque club events that is celebrated in double fashion. First, tomorrow, with its traditional dinner and Tamborrada that will take place this year at the Zerain Cider House (Quevedo 3), managed by Adelaida Azpiolea and her son Koldo Mendizabal. At midnight, under the direction of Jose Maria Arana, the club’s Tamborrada will move those attended with the sounds of Sarriegi.
The climax of the festivities will take place on Sunday, the day when the Tamborrada will perform the March of San Sebastian accompanied by the club’s choir to end with mass at noon at the Saint Ignatius Church of the Basques (Principe 31). On Sunday the 24th at 1:15pm the traditional Tamborrada Txiki will take place in front of the Basque club, directed by Ainhoa Bravo that will close the San Sebastian festivities at the Basque club in Madrid. But the Basque Club's one is just one of the many that diferent people and Basque groups in Madrid organize in the Spanisg capital city.
Barcelona, Montreal, Mexico…
In Barcelona, they will spend the evening with dinner and then the Tamborrada and in Arrecifes, Argentina, the Euskaldunak Denak Bat will celebrate San Sebastian with a dinner. All attendees are asked to dress in blue and white.
In Montreal, Quebec, Basques at the Euskaldunak Association will gather tomorrow at 5:30pm at a Mintzapraktika open to anyone wanting to speak Basque. They will also follow the broadcast of the Tamborrada live from Donostia on TV. The festivities will continue on Saturday with a festive Tamborrada program with singing, pintxos and music.
In Mexico, the Basque club will celebrate on January 23 with dinner that is usually one of the most anticipated events of the year. As always, the club’s Tamborrada will also include the sounds of Sarriegi.
Week of festivities in Necochea
The San Sebastian Week organized by the Euskal Etxea in Necochea, Argentina deserves special mention that will take place over several days. Here is the program:
-1/19/2016: San Sebastian Festivities begin in Necochea with the screening of a Basque film. The event will take place at the Basque Club (58 and 65) at 7pm.
-1/20/2016: The Basque club will host mass at Our Lady of Lourdes, followed by Tamborrada at the Basque club. Event begins at 8pm on Calle 6, 4150.
1/22/2016: Pintxo Eguna will be celebrated beginning at 9pm at the Necochea Basque Club as part of the San Sebastian festivities. After the tasting there will be a dance at the Basque club.
1/23/2016: The last day of the big week in Necochea is for the local cooks who will greet their guests with a giant paella. After dinner there will also be dancing. Tickets can be purchased form the secretary after January 18 at the clubhouse.
