Reno, Nevada, USA. In spite of all of Reno’s connections to the Basque Country, the Center for Basque Studies, the University Studies Abroad Consortium, and the fact that Reno is Sister City to Donostia, Danborrada has never been traditionally celebrated by the Basque community there. This year however, thanks to Dr. Javier Echeverria and his family, Donosti residents, many from the university community will participate in the celebration.
Dr. Echeverria, this year’s William A. Douglass Scholar at the Center for Basque Studies is organizing the event along with his wife Belen and daughter Irene. The festivities will take place at the Echeverria residence, complete with drums for all. The group will join the Danborrada in Donostia via internet and traditional Donosti pintxos will be served.
This year marks the second Danborrada celebration for New York and Seattle. The celebration in Seattle will take place at the Txori Bar with doors opening at 5am. Traditional Basque pintxos and drinks, regular features at the locale, will surely lure Basques and non-Basques alike to the event. The New York Basque club already celebrated last Saturday at the Euskal Etxea on January 17th in conjunction with the club’s monthly dinner.
