The project will count on three fundamental guarantees, from the University of the Basque Country through its Research Group in Constructed Heritage; from the city of Salto; and as main administrator, the local Basque Club, Saltoko Euskadunen Taldea.  The presentation was made by Basque architect Ander De la Fuente Arana and another Uruguayan architect, representative of the Commission for Cultural Heritage of the Nation, Magela Terzano.  Special guest of the club, EuskalKultura.com, covered what took place at the presentation.

Salto, Uruguay.   Even if the dream of recuperating the old Bodega once owned by Pascual Harraigue from Hazparne, birthplace of the Tannat strain and symbol of Uruguay, has been being sold to the city for some time, it wasn’t until the beginning of this week that the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea Basque club presented a project to the city designed by architect Ander De la Fuente Arana.  De la Fuente is part of the Unesco Cathedral of Cultural Landscapes and Heritage of the University of the Basque Country, whose main function is recuperating the heritage that is integrated in the landscape, that is to say from an integrative worldview that allows to value the heritage but at the same time act o the environment, also making other efforts to assist in the recovery.

As explained by the Basque architect, “the recuperation of the Harriague Bodega was very interesting to us from the beginning, mainly because it is related to our wine culture and production, but also because with the Uruguay River and with the commercialization through it of a very special type of vine. Currently, the project has the support of the Director of the Basque Community, Asier Vallejo, and broadly has set short term goals of not totally restoring the bodega but something much “smaller and visible,” that will later grow and get stronger.

The venue where the winery operated until 1910 is currently owned by the city, and is destined to function as a depot and headquarters for the city’s roads.  This supposes that as a first step of the project the area would have to be cleaned up by the city.  EuskalKultura.com will dedicate an article tomorrow to the special development of both topics, regarding the project presented by Ander De la Fuente Arana and the history of the Harriague Bodega.

Implication of the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea

The presentation of the project was part of the program prepared for the visit of both De la Fuente Arana and Magela Terzano.  Throughout the day of February 1, the delegation, accompanied by members of the Basque club with its president, Adela Soto, at the head, members of the Honorary Commission of Historic Heritage in Salto and representatives of the local government, had a meeting in the morning, a press conference in the conference room at the Palacio Cordoba, a visit of the Bodega Harriague, lunch at the clubhouse and a city tour with a visit of the Bertolini Broglio Bodega and dinner.

Yesterday, on February 2, there was another tour and a visit to the house of Pascual Harriague (including the Casa Verde and Casa Vasca) and the house of Juan Harriague.  The program continued with a reception by the local mayor, Andres Lima, of the delegation, with a conference at the clubhouse the local bodega owners were invited to; and to close the program, a tasting where those present could enjoy the varieties of the local bodegas.
