Invited by the second grade at the local Catholic School, Pablo Pavesa and Anibal Izurieta, from the Guillermo Larregui Basque club of Chacabuco visited the students to give them a class on Basque culture. After the talk, the children joined in the dance of the group with some of their classmates who belong to the Basque club dance group.
Chacabuco, Argentina. The Chacabuco Basque club had a special opportunity to share Basque culture in an area that is little frequented. With the ok of school authorities, the second grade students at the local Catholic School invited representatives from the Basque club to give a class on immigration and family. According to club president, Pablo Pavesa, “There is a small group in this class of Basque club dancers. This surely aroused the curiosity of their classmates and that is why we were invited.”
Convinced that this is a special place to share the culture, Pavesa began his talk with geography, music, language and traditions, history and the Basque Country today, among others. “Each of these points was followed with much attention by the studnets and teachers who attended the talk which was followed by many questions,” he explained.
Once it was over, it was the dancers’ turn. They started with an Agurra performed by Pablo Pavesa and Anibal Izurieta to honor those present. Afterwards, they invited the children to participate in mixed hoops. And to close the performance, the children from Guillermo Larregui Basque club, students in this class, were the ones who danced Zazpi Jauzi for their classmates. The visitors left the school with a kalejira that began in the hall and ended on the playground.
