Reno, NV, USA. Currently closed to the public because of the Coronavirus, the Jon Bilbao Basque Library at the University of Nevada, Reno is far from being inactive. It not only continues to work remotely, providing to support to students and researchers; but it also strives to strengthen its contact with users launching the “One Item-A-Day” campaign to share a photo from its photo archive every day on its Facebook page.
Every day, since the middle of March, Elizabeth Lepe, student assistant at the library, has carefully chosen a photo and provides a brief description, inviting comments, or discussion on what the image elicits. Sometimes questions are as simple as “What is your favorite Basque dish? Those that encourage people to comment and contribute the most in a positive way, a pleasant change in the midst of not so encouraging news that we currently receive.
Iñaki Arrieta Baro, Head Librarian at the Jon Bilbao Basque Library trusts that the initiative will be interesting for both users not familiar with Basque culture, now provided an item every day, with the possibility of learning, discovering and getting involved in something new, as for those who belong to the Diaspora or who are more involved in it, for whom the images may generate memories, emotions, or links to their own experiences of being Basque.
