Two pieces of good news from San Miguel, from the local Basque association Askatasunaren Bidea. First, their Basque Film Series organized by the club has been declared of Municipal Interest. Secondly, the Euskera and culture workshops by Mariana Fernandez Castelli will have an addition from this week, with new specific Euskera classes. The first Euskera class will take place this Friday, June 3 and will be taught by Martin Colombet.
San Miguel, Argentina. The Askatasunaren Bidea Association in San Miguel will celebrate its first six years on June 21 with its Basque contribution becoming more and more evident. Proof of this is that the local government has recognized the club’s Basque Film Series that they have organized for the last four years. In April, and due to the “quality of the films shown and the interest shown by the public,” the mayor Joaquin de la Torre has declared the Series as “an activity of Municipal Interest.” Remember that the series is headed by Carlos Gabilondo and the films are shown in the Municipal Library “Domingo Faustino Sarmiento.”
Amama
As part of the series, on Saturday, May 21 the film Amama by Asier Altuna was shown. In the words of the organizers, “the room was full. The series has been organized for four years and over time it has gathered new spectators, especially because of the interest of the films shown.” As part of the screening, the Askatasunaren Bidea Association gave Carlos Gabilondo a folder with a copy of the declaration and a letter of thanks “for his affection, work and commitment.”
Euskera
Since its foundation, Askatasunaren Bidea has always aimed to spread the Basque culture, as well as through teaching Euskera. That is why it has taught a workshop on Basque and the Basque culture for the last six years. It has been taught by Mariana Fernández Castelli, on the last Friday of the month from 16-18:00 at the Domingo F. Sarmiento Library.
Following the same model – classroom/workshop, this year Basque classes will also be added. As oerganizer Horacio Marotto told EuskalKultura.com, “the increase in number of Basque students, year after year, has motivated us to diversify the forms of learning in response to the possibilities and the expectations of more people. That is why we have decided to open a new course, three hours a week, taught by Martin Colombet, a professor in training in HABE’s Euskara Munduan Program. Classes will begin on June 3 and will take place on Fridays from 15:30-18:30 also at the library.” The workshops as well as this class are free and open to the public.
The Association would like to thank Cristina Moreno de Romero Victorica, Director of the Domingo F. Sarmiento Library for her support and making Askatasunaren Bidea’s activities possible there.
