Lima, Peru. COVID-29 in Peru has already claimed more than 62,000 victims and has obliged the Lima Basque club to hold all of its activities virtually. In one of the latest contributions online, club president, Raul Noblecilla, published an article about Pedro Arrupe, priest from Bilbao born in 1907 and Superior General of the Society of Jesus from 1965 to 1983, with an important career as a missionary in which his time in Japan during the years of the World War II stood out.
Noblecilla delves into the article into some of the milestones in the life of the Basque priest. “Episodes such as the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, his stay in Japan for 27 ears, practicing the missionary philosophy of enculturation, and the profound changes in the Society under the principles of ‘men for others’ and the ‘option for justice’ that became one of the most important and charismatic Jesuit Generals,” he highlights.
Raul Noblecilla is Peruvian of Basque descent from Astigarraga, he studied in one of the many educational centers owned by the Jesuits in the world. “It was the College of the Jesuit Fathers in Lima, where I first learned about the life and work of Aita Arrupe” he explains.
