Bilbao, Bizkaia. This is at least the result of a survey conducted by the Basque Government's Department of the Basque Community Abroad. The ways in which these people maintain their link with “their Basqueness” are above all by personal relationships (54%), participation in Basque club activities (44%) and news (34%). The survey was presented yesterday during the 7th World Congress of Basque Collectivities Abroad that is taking place this week in Bilbao.
The goal of the study was to get to know the attitudes and opinions of the Basques who live outside the Basque Country, in regards to their identity, link to Basque culture and their relationship with the Basque clubs and community and the knowledge and assessment of the Government’s programs provided by the Department of the Basque Community Abroad. The survey was open June 7-August 30, 2019, and was aimed to people linked to the Basque Government’s Secretariat of Foreign Action. It was available on social media and various websites used by Basques abroad.
The majority of the Basques abroad who responded reside in Argentina (54%), and another 20% from other countries in Latin America, 10% from other European countries and 9% from the US and Canada, 5% from Spain and 1% from Euskal Herria.
