On the 20th edition of the ecology day known as “A Child is Born, a Tree is Born,” the Eusko Deya Basque club in Salliquelo realized its dream of planting a sapling of the tree that is the symbol for Basques in its city, and it did so on the occasion of the birth of member Juan Jose Vidaurre’s son, Patxi.  The sapling was donated by Pedro Azcaray from Gernika and graces the Green space, along with other trees on the BMX trail. 

Salliquelo, Argentina.  The local Basque club hasn’t enjoyed great activity over the last two years, but it still continues and its members count on it.  On October 3 they joined in the ecology day “A Child is Born, a Tree is Born,” by planting an oak that will represent the Basque community in a new green space and they did so thanks to Patxi Vidaurre.

Marta Gorostidi, club member, told EuskalKultura.com that “every year this activity takes place in the city, and its goal is to plant a new tree for every new born.”  “We have always wanted to participate but until now, we hadn’t had the chance. This year, one of our members, Juan Jose Vidaurre, had a son and we decided to plant a tree together.”

On behalf of Eusko Deya and Patxi Vidaurre, the oak is now part of a group of 80 tress that will embellish the field in Ituzaingo and Juan Jose Moreda, former railway grounds where a new green space has been created that will later be dedicated to BMX.

The sapling was donated by Pedro Azcaray, originally from Gernika, who currently resides in the city.  “He has several oaks in his field and he gave us this one so that we could plant it.”  “Next year, when the club celebrates its 30^th anniversary, we will have a celebration where we will place a plaque at the foot of the tree,” Gorostidi added.

Zorionak, especially to Patxi, who will surely come "with a loaf of bread under his arm" and will secure the future growth and good wishes to his environment and his family at the Eusko Deya as well as all Basques in Salliquelo.
