Donostia-San Sebastián. Once again, we are just days before January 20th, San Sebastian Day, but as in many other areas, this time in a rare and unprecedented context because of COVID-19. In Donostia, the Town Hall had announced that the usual celebration would be impossible with no in person events taking place. In our case, the main headquarters of EuskalKultura.eus is in Donostia, and during this time, we always participate playing drums, this year too, although this time we will join in online with much enthusiasm and loyalty.
ETB will broadcast the flag raising and a recorded Tamborrada. The city still has a curfew from 10:00-pm-6:00am
The local Town Hall has been distributing San Sebastian flags in recent days for people to hang on their balconies, while advising against any celebration that would suppose people gathering in the streets. The retransmission of ETB of the flag raising and the marches, as well as children’s Tamborradas will continue also they have all been previously recorded in compliance with health protocols in place due to the pandemic. It has to be in this way because the commitment to the Tamborrada obliges to work so that future editions can be celebrated.
The festivities have also been cancelled in most plaaces in the Diaspora. In places like Necochea, they will celebrate but on a smaller scale, with masks and social distancing
The Tamborrada is also a tradition in the Diaspora that has also been affected by the pandemic. It's celebrated every year in places like the Euzko Etxea in Necochea, in Argentina, or the Euskal Etxea in Mexico, or the Euskal Etxea in Madrid or the Eusko Etxea in New York. This year, the celebration has been canceled in almost all of them. Just in Necochea they will held a smaller event, outside with masks and social distancing.
