Montevideo, Uruguay. The Federation of Basque Institutions in Uruguay, FIVU, and the national postal service paid tribute to the Gipuzkoan bard with a postage stamp and postmark with Basque motifs, especially with the figure of Jose Maria Iparragirre himself with his guitar, figures of dantzaris, and eguzkilores, a finch bird and even fragments of the hymn “Gernikako Arbola.”
The in person event took place in the Sodre hall, the official service for artistic and cultural shows. Speakers included were the President of the Sodre board of directors, Martin Inthamoussu; FIVU president, Juan Pedro Arin, and the president of the Uruguayan Post Office, Rafael Navarriño; also in attendance was the board of directors of FIVU and Uruguayan Basque clubs, respecting health protocols and social distancing.
New technology also allowed the participation at a distance from Urretxu, Iparragirre birthplace, the Basque Government’s Director of the Basque Community Abroad, Gorka Alvarez Aranburu and the mayor of Urretxu, Jon Luqui. The delegation of Euskadi in Argentina-Mercosur and FEVA also attended virtually.
During the event, the president of FIVU sang the verses of “Gernikako Arbola,” that reached the audience following the presentation from Euskal Herria. The presentation took place on December 3rd in conjunction with the International Day of Euskera (ENE, Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna).
