On the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, the Chair for Basque Free Thought at the National University of La Plata (UNLP) and the Euzko Etxea organized an event “Gernika: iruditik soinura,” (Gernika: from image to sound), which used Picasso’s work as its focus. Jose Saldias spoke about the painting and Maestro Maximo D. Pujol presented the suite “Guernica,” that was later performed by the university’s string quartet.
La Plata, Argentina. As part of the activities organized by the Basque community in Argentina in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, the Chair for Basque Free Thought at the National University of La Plata, directed by Prof. Judith Martirena, held a conference/recital last Thursday, September 14th, at the Pasaje Dardo Rocha Cultural Center in Buenos Aires.
In agreement with the Euzko Etxea in La Plata and with the general production of Ignacio Esquiroz, “Gernika:iruditik soinura” (Gernika, from image to sound) was comprised of three moments. The first part was the participation of Jose Saldias, museologist, historian and specialist in iconography, consisting of a tour of the different formulas of the artistic expressions that throughout history, sought to reflect the horror of genocide. Later, and using the Picasso’s painting “Guernica” as a focus, Saldias analyzed the iconographic components of the work.
The second part was up to Maximo D. Pujol, internationally-recognized composer and guitarist, who wrote “Guernica Suite for Guitar and String Quartet,” inspired by Picasso’s work, who spoke about his work.
Finally, the UNLP String Quartet comprised of Nicolás Favero Urbiztondo (1st violin), Fernando Favero (2nd violin), Roberto Regio (viola) and Siro Bellisomi (violoncello), along with Marcelino Echeverria on the guitar performed Pujol’s musical composition: I. Women, II The Bird, III The Warrior, IV. The Hors and the Bull, V. Woman with Dead Child, and VI. Epilogue (or resistance).
