The Askatasunaren Bidea group in San Miguel, in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires, celebrated its 8th birthday and did so by showing a Basque film and with a toast.  As part of the event, the director of the Sarmiento Library, the headquarters of the group’s activities, honored the work done by Askatasunaren Bidea to spread the culture of Euskal Herria in the area.

San Miguel, Argentina.   Even if the date of the group’s foundation is June 21, the Basque-Argentine group, Askatasunaren Bidea, celebrated its 8th anniversary last Saturday the 24th with festivities that had two moments.

At 7pm, with Carlos Gabilondo, the 22nd edition of the Basque Film Series organized by the group took place.  The title chosen for this event was Urte berri on, amona, by Telmo Esnal, with Gabilondo presenting the film as well as moderating the discussion after the movie.

After the film, members of Askatasunaren Bidea invited everyone to make a toast.  As part of the ceremony, Cristina Moreno Vera, Director of the Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Public Library, headquarters for the majority of the group’s activities, recognized the group and thanked and congratulated them for “the contribution made to the culture, contributing to the consolidation of traditional values of the Basque people. 

The declaration was also signed by Mrs. Alma Quiroga, in the name of the Association of Friends of the Library. Remember that the space given Askatasuanre Bidea allows them to spread the Basque language by allowing them to hold Basque classes, completely free of charge.  The Library has also become a distinguished place to keep books on Basque subjects.

During the toast, representatives from Askatasunaren Bidea presented Professor Carlos Gabilondo a present and through him, another one to the Basque Club in Havana Cuba.  In 2017, the Cuban Basque club will celebrate its 140th anniversary and Basque film, thanks to Gabilondo, will also be part of the program.
