Rosario, Argentina. The Teatrotren II Theater group in Rosario has premiered in October the work “Odaluza Vasca,” the story of Navarrese, Guillermo Larregui, better known as the “Basque with the wheelbarrow,” this time taken to the stage. “Odaluza Vasca,” tells the story of the travels of Larregui, that began in 1935, in Comandante Luis Piedra Buena in the Province of Santa Cruz in Patagonia, that would take him more than 20,000 kilometers on foot pushing a wheelbarrow.
Directed by Mauricio Caturelli, and including performances by Lilian Rudolf and Vladimir Lasaga, the piece highlights “the stubbornness of this Basque who begins his journey because of a bet; the loneliness that accompanied him on the road which was also the inspiration for his reflections and letters, and how he arrives to his final days.”
“Odaluza Vasca” debuted on the first Saturday of October and will be performed every Sunday until Saturday, November 9th. The play starts at 10pm at the La Escalera Theater, on 9 de Julio 324 in Rosario. Reservations can be made by calling: 341 665-5199.
The Story Behind the Work
“Odaluza Vasca,” is the result of two years of research. As actress Lilian Rudolf told EuskalKultura.eus, “Our sources were the book The Basque and the Wheelbarrow, by Txema Urrutia, and other material like Larregui’s own letters. We even created a wheelbarrow using the model of the first one he used that is in the Museum in Lujan.”
None of the members of the project are directly linked with the Basque community or Euskal Herria. “We learned of the story through a documentary and it impacted us. We found Larregui’s life and experiences very interesting, his travels, suffering, and his conviction to the challenge "Because I am Basque,” as he said. That is what motivated us to tell his story.”
Without links to the community, but its creators are aware of the admiration that this individual aroused in those that heard about his story, above all among the Basques. As such, they have not given up the idea of touring Basque clubs with the work in 2020.
