Several Northern Nevada entities have published Elkokoak, the Basques of Elko," an online exhibit that shows the reality of the Elko Basque community. This initiative is contributing its grain of sand to the 2016 Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s “Innovation by Culture” that is dedicated to the Basques and will take place this June and July in Washington.
Elko, NV. Elko is known for the presence and influence of the Basque community in this Nevada town. This year, for example, the annual “Elko Basque National Festival” will celebrate its 53rd edition. It will take place over the 4th of July weekend, coinciding this year with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC that is dedicated to the Basques. That is why Basques in Elko decided to create the online exhibit Elkokoak, the Basques of Elko, to introduce this rich cultural reality to the general public.
Entities and individuals like the Virtual Humanities Collections, Great Basin College, Elko Euzkaldunak and Vince J. Jauristi have participated in the creation of this online exhibit that is joining in the “Innovation by Culture” initiative of the 2016 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. The exhibit is available online and is preparing a large parallel program.
The contents include a section called Elko Basque Stories that includes community members’ stories. This section will continue to be enriched with new contents periodically. The section, Intertwined gathers articles published by Vince J. Jaurist in the Elko Daily Free Press. There is also a section dedicated to the Elko National Basque Festival and other resources in regards to the US Basque-American community.
