San Nicolás, Argentina. The San Nicolas Basque Club, led by Ana Maria Erausquin, invited two new schools as part of its charitable programs. On June 12th, they welcomed 60 students and five chaperones from Elementary School #40 who learned about Basque music, dance and customs and then enjoyed a traditional chicken paella prepared by the club cooks. On June 6th, their guests were from School #48 from the Moreno Neighborhood, in the north of San Nicolas, where 50 children participated in another edition of “Diasporaren Herri Kirolak.” Erausquin was also present at this event.
The “Etxe Nasaia” program was created after the crisis in Argentina in 2001 by members of Euzkal Etxea in San Nicolas. It was created, fundamentally, by a group of volunteer cooks at the club that decided to do what they could to diminish the effects of the crisis in their town, above all for the most vulnerable, the children, club sources explained.
Etxe Nasaia emerged from those special circumstances where it was established like a lunch once a month at the Basque Club for students in public schools, accompanied by complimentary activities, all provided free of charge to schools in the area.
Besides continuing their charitable programs, last week the Euskal Etxea also participated in the Human Chain initiative from Gure Esku Dago.
