Based on a true story by Josune, the show “GU, Us,” tells the story of so many immigrants that came to Argentina from Euskal Herria leaving the war behind, the misery and dictatorial persecution.  The work is brought to the stage by dantzaris of all ages from the local Basque club, who fuse Basque and Argentine folklore in the show.  The event is tomorrow at 20:30 at the Municipal Theater.

Bahia Blanca, Argentina.  Following the steps of last year’s production, the dantzaris from the Union Vasca Basque club in Bahia Blanca return to the stage to present their 2015 show that showcases their achievements in dance as well as what they have learned about the Basque Country, its history and its immigration.

“The show, Gu, Us is an adaptation of the documentary by Nuria Villalta that is in part an adaptation of the diary of Josune, the lead role,” as explained to EuskalKultura.com by Romina Larrañaga, one of the club dance directors.  “It is the theater adaptation of the video that I made myself, working as a director along with Eugenio Aldacour and Tomas Arrillaga.”

Gu, Us tells the stories of millions of immigrants represented in the true story of Josune, a small girl who came to Argentina from the Basque country leaving behind the war, misery and dictatorial prohibition, but also her family and traditions.  “Thanks to her brother, with a small suitcase full of illusions, Josune begins a new life after being uprooted and adapting to a new country who knew how to adopt her,” they continued.

The story is organized in five scenes: life in the Basque Country before the war; the outbreak of the war; immigration; arrival in Argentina; life in Argentina becoming part of a Basque club.  “In addition the directors from Beti Aurrera, Union Vasca’s dance group, who is in charge of different areas of the evening, have also included former dancers and families in the show who volunteered to participate,” Larrañaga said.

Including Basque dance and symbolizing the fusion between both cultures, the local Folklore Vivo group also participates with verses and typical Argentine dances.  “It is a way to symbolize the two countries that we carry within,” the director concluded.

The show will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, at 20:30 at the Municipal Theater in Bahia Blanca, Alsina 425.  Admission is $50 at the door.
